Position: Occupational Health and Safety Advisor
Location: Chittagong
Deadline: 5th September 2010

The Western Marine Shipyard (WMS), based in Chittagong seeks a Health and Safety Advisor to manage the overall development of workplace health, occupational and safety strategy within the Shipyard, and manage the onsite medical centre, serving both the workforce and surrounding community.


Technical Competencies

  • Experience in managing medical/health related issues at national/regional cooperation level. Experience in project management and implementation (at least 5 years) based on operational planning matrices
  • Experience in running and implementing an occupational, health and safety program as an integral part of medical health services offered by the shipyard
  • Delivery of Health and Safety trainings and orientations
  • Coordinating and conducting incident investigations and report summaries, root-cause analysis
  • Providing monthly reporting to the Manager of HR and the iPPP coordinator
  • Monitoring field reports and site activities for compliance to projects
  • In-depth knowledge of or experience in coordinating and implementing Public Private Partnerships, and strengthening the public private partnership approach among the private sector and public sector, facilitating public-private mix
  • The incumbent should be able to
  • Promote health service provision and development within the regional and national government health structure
  • Provide technical and administrative support on monitoring and evaluating occupational incidents to the HR department of WMS
  • Disseminate relevant and appropriate scientific and technical information on occupational, health and safety procedures at workforce and management level
  • Cooperate in the development of human resources/capacity building involved in disease prevention/control, in health promotion and occupational risk management
  • Support within the framework of the project, the implementation of integrated approaches in health promotion, prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, to the benefit of the community and the broader health service efforts
  • Identify and find solutions to health and occupational health risk issues that may become apparent on the site
  • Support the management in their development of the Corporate Social responsibility portfolio.

Required Entry Qualifications and Competencies:
  • University degree in medicine, and postgraduate specialisation at Master's level in public health; experience in implementing and follow up of occupational health and safety procedures
  • 3-5 year experience in the Health and Safety field
  • A strong commitment to health, safety and environment and being someone who leads by example
  • Up to date knowledge of OHS issues, trends and applicable legislation Experience with project management, training and presentation skills and strong relationship building skills as well as coaching and leadership skills
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health completion of post secondary Certificate or Diploma in Health and Safety
  • At least 5 years relevant experience as per the main duties described above, including 3 years experience in management and programme administration
  • Age limit: 40 to 45 years.
  • Computer literacy: MS Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
