Working with Disabled People to Promote Human Rights
ADD is a UK based international organization working with disabled people in 8 countries of Asia and Africa to promote human rights and ensure social justice through capacity building and influencing change in policies through advocacy. In Bangladesh, ADD now operates in 16 districts directly and through supporting grassroots DPOs.
ADD are currently operating a project entitled “From Margin to Mainstream: A Drive of Challenged People for Economic Empowerment” with financial assistance from the EEP/Shiree. Shiree is a DFID/UKAID and GoB-supported Challenge Fund specifically working with the extreme poor in Bangladesh. It currently funds 36 different projects, the portfolio of which is diverse: targeting a variety of vulnerable populations (e.g. Female Headed-Households (FHHs), street children, the elderly and physically challenged), in distinct pockets of extreme poverty across the country. Through their partner projects, Shiree aims to create economic opportunities that allow households to climb out of extreme poverty.
ADD’s Shiree-funded project currently has a vacancy for a Research Officer. This is an ADD position and will be based in the Dhaka office, but involves research work across a selection of Shiree partner NGOs.
Research Officer
Location: Dhaka with frequent field visits and travel
Salary will be BDT 55,000-60,000 per month.
Length of contract: Until end of December 2013, with possibility of extension

Job Purpose: 
The ADD project is one of Shiree’s Innovation Fund projects, which are relatively small scale projects testing approaches to reducing extreme poverty at the field level. As the Shiree family of projects grows, there is significant potential for lesson learning across all Innovation Fund projects. Shiree is keen to capture and make use of this learning as it happens and to share it with its partners, to analyse CMS data and undertake action research across the Innovation Fund projects. Research Officers are expected to be able to engage with a variety of cross-cutting issues specific to extreme poverty detailed below:
  • Income generation and small business creation (involving challenges such as market linkages).
  • Elderly and physically challenged.
  • Urban extreme poverty involving the specific challenges of slum and street dwellers.
  • Gender and women’s empowerment.
  • Children in extreme poor households.
  • The psychological challenges of life in extreme poverty. 
Key responsibilities are:
  • Analyse CMS quantitative and qualitative data and identify key questions arising from it
  • Pose key strategic and operational questions and recommendations from this analysis.
  • Undertake qualitative tracking
  • Identify action research issues with project managers
  • Design and write research proposals and plan future studies.
  • Undertake a variety of action research projects, using a variety of research tools in the field (including in-depth interviews, surveys, focus group discussions, unstructured observations).
  •   Assure quality of data collection; data organizing and cleaning.
  • Document research findings into a variety of outputs for different audiences and communicate them with NGO staff , the Shiree Operations Team
  • Present and communicate proposals and findings in the Extreme Poverty Research Group forum.
  • Present findings in other forums, sharing sessions and conferences.
  • Work with the Communications and Advocacy team in Shiree to disseminate the research findings.
  • Conduct or support other research, advocacy and lesson learning activities
  • Work closely with Shiree team, including young professionals (international and local) and colleagues at Bath and Cambridge Universities on all of the above.
Person Specification:
  • Masters in Social Science with good academic records (Development Studies, Demography/ Economics/Sociology/Anthropology are preferred).
  • At least 3 years’ experience in designing/conducting qualitative research, data collection and analysis.
  • Strong English and Bangla (written and spoken) and ability to translate between the two in speech and written documents.
  • Strong qualitative research skills
  • Able to conceptualise research questions, plan and execute field research, collate, analyse and present
  • Strong writing skills and ability to document research findings for a variety of audiences (such as background papers, working papers, briefing papers, policy briefs and newspaper articles).
  • Ability to prepare presentations and to present summary findings
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team of national and international staff.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Commitment to reducing extreme poverty.
  • Enthusiasm for field work with extreme poor beneficiaries and ability to spend long periods in the field
  • Awareness of gender issues affecting extreme poor households
  • Good interpersonal, motivational and effective communication skills.
  • Good team spirit, motivation, commitment and willingness to travel.
Desirable
  • Familiarity with SPSS and/or other quantitative or qualitative data analysis tools
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills along with experience of data collection methods.
